Hi Gil.
My home station (tower) is still set up for 2m SSB. I've got a 9ele yagi and preamps on the tower. It's good for Tampere, Rovaniemi, Kemi, Stockholm, Umeå, Tromso ~650 km and better over water. My best was Hannover Germany, but that was a weird tropo opening.
2m SSB can give extremely reliable regional comms. 👍

Same here! I was camping and forgot my RG8 low loss cable. I had a 25ft piece of RG8X and it worked just fine! I know I lost some in it but it kept my APRS going in the camper. WW5RM-5 in the camper! =]

Big yes on the loop antenna, 2 side by side, t fed, even better. Nothing like a loop, my fave antenna. Very interesting video, lots of potential on the small bands, I think for prepping, small antennas make very good sense, 100 miles is all that would be needed in survival situation. I have an interest in 11m sideband, and 70 cm, for prepping. Keep up the great work. Enjoy all your vids.

The weak signal modes are definitely useful if you build a network as you said. I ran an FT690 as a teen with a homemade rotatable dipole and was only short 6 states of my WAS. Thanks for sharing !

My very 1st SSB radio was a Yaesu FT290R mk1 the best i ever did with it was a contact from Liverpool UK to Germany using a 12 Element hombrew ZL Special Yagi and a Microwave Modules 100watt PA on SSB..I also used 2Mtrs a lot when i lived in New Zealand South Island and had regular mobile contacts upto 100 Miles using a 5/8 Hombrew vertical on top a large van roof....I never could get many Kiwis to go horizontal as they all proffered fm mode using verticals...The way to go with 6mtrs and above is using horizontal beams each end SSB. ....Great Video Gill 👍👍👍👍Sporadic E Tropospheric ducting and Moon Bounce are all amazing modes as well. Beautiful command of English. Useful information. I'll see what my IC 7000 can do on SSB.

Just acquired an Icom IC-290A - it has SSB and it works... paid $53 USD. I'm quite impressed with the radio so far.
Thanks for the video!

I just now started using 2M SSB even though four of my radios have it. I just ordered two halos so I can stack them. I will be using my late fathers FT-480R with a 45W amp that he used back in the late 70's at my QTH. I have modern radios with 2M SSB, but I am doing this in memory of him. One of my friends is learning CW as like me so we are going to start playing battleship using 2M CW.

Thank for the great video Gil. I use my IC-251A a lot for local wide area rag chew using only a Halo loop antenna horizontally polarized. I also have a MFJ-9406 for 6 meter SSB and CW using a home made dipole. They are great modes for 6 meters and 2 meters.

In my case, under flat band conditions. I worked GI4SNA regular. Yaesu FT817 (5 watts) to a horizontal omni.
The aerial was a cloverleaf (Wimo Big Wheel) at about 6 metres off the floor. The site was about 80 m asl.
From IO93RC to IO64XM is around 360k. I think I would struggle now since there has been an explosion of activity on the Tuesday night contests plus, of course, everybody wants Dave in their logs.

I'm an expatriot American, now a Canadian citizen. Canada as you might know is a country founded by both French and English nations. As a result we are now officially bilingual. Even so I speak no French so feel disadvantaged. Being able to shift from English to French as well as you do is certainly admirable.
