Say hello to the Atomos Ninja Assassin 4K external recorder

The Ninja Assassin is 10% lighter and 35% more affordable than the award-winning Shogun. Priced at $1295, the Ninja Assassin is a dedicated 4KHDMI DSLR/DSLM and video cameras with professional monitoring, recording, playback and editing. The Ninja Assassin boasts the screen size, resolution and scopes of the premium Shogun model, but forgoes the 12G/6G/3G-SDI connectivity, RAW recording functionality, in-built conversion, Genlock and balanced XLR audio connections.

Let me explain this simply. If you are in the market for a field monitor for shooting video you will be spending upwards of $1,000 for something quality. That is why I recommend looking at what Atomos has to offer here. Not only do you get a fantastic monitor, you also get the added benefits of a 4K recorder built in.

The Assassin is meant for the DSLR and Mirrorless owners who don't need all the bells and whistles of the more expensive Shogun. It gives you the ability to record 4K at 10 bit 4:2:2 without a time limit which is a major win.

If you have one of the new SONY 4K Mirrorless cameras you can record 4K right to the memory card. But if you want to get the cleanest videos possible right off the sensor you will need something like this Ninja Assassin.

This is just a quick preview and introduction to this new product. I will be taking it into the field with a 4K camera to put it through it's paces in the not to distant future.

I'm so close to picking one of these Atomos recorders. The screens look amazing, love the ability to shoot beyond 29:59, and the ability to go up to 4K is just icing on the cake.

I really want that. Ever since I bought my C100 I said I was going to buy an Atmos. Now I have a GH4 as a B cam and the 4K External would come in handy. Definitely buying one!

I honestly think that SoundDevices (or, VideoDevices in this case) beat them to the punch for an inexpensive solution for the smaller 4k outputting cameras, with their Pix-Eh5 recorder.
The argument at that point would be that the Atomos has a larger screen, but the Pix-E is built infinitely better (no plastic) and honestly a 5in. display recorder is going to be more practical (FOR SOME) than a 7in. display recorder hanging off the side of a small a7S.

As always, try to field test both before coming to a buying conclusion.

The Sony cameras don't do 10bit output, only 8bit. It's the GH4 that has the 10bit output.

You say it forgoes RAW recording, does mean that you couldn't use the V-Log mode on the GH4 ?

I wonder, why can't they make DSLR's that can take mini m.2 SSDs (they are cheaper and faster than SD cards, and have better write endurance, and offer a simpler interface)? I feel this is the berst solution, atomos already showed that 2.5 inch SSDs are great to work with since you can just them to an eSATA dock, or thunderbolt dock, and begin editing right from the SSD (just make sure you don't use any SSD with TLC flash with the atomos it will not only kill the SSD fast since they have crap write endurance, but it will make recording unreliable).

Focus peaking is a camera feature or a monitor feature? If I'm using this with an A7rII in manual focus, will I be able to see the peaking highlights on the monitor?

Will this reduce the heating issues faced in the A7rII?

Hey Jared. I have Nikon D810 with latest firmware 1.10 that came out last year. I'm wondering if there is a 4k solution that works with the hdmi output at this time. Thoughts?
