Testing Sandvik 14C28N Blade Steel

14C28N edge retention testing. My original intention was to use this vid as the review of the Kershaw Knockout. Instead it morphed into testing of the blade steel of 14C28N. I wanted to see how well the blade would hold up after some "normal" (of course normal to one may not be to another) use. And I gave it a good beating on log. But for me, not only is edge retention important, but how easy is it to sharpen following heavy use?

I have a Kershaw Leek and Packrat with 14C28N. Both are very easy to sharpen and hold an edge very well in the EDC role.

I enjoy my Ruike P108-SB with 14C28N blade a lot.

This has been my edc knife for going on 7 years now and it is really an impressive tool. It takes and holds an edge like no other knives I have owned. The lockup is still like new and there is no wiggle at all.

I need to know much more about knife steels. Nice demonstration.

very nice. great video and im very happy to see stropping :) im actually fine with nothing but a strop if i dont let the edge go too "dull". lot of people underestimate strops :) but also lot depends on the edge geometry. if the edge is too steep, its harder to maintain with the strop and it can cause unnecessary rounding of the edge. Great to see videos like these of knives in use showing the edge holding and ease of resharpening. well done Crocket!

First video i've watched of yours. I'm just starting on the sharpmaker, still learning. Thanks for the vid, new subscriber.

I like to strop from tip to heel of the blade. Seems easier to me. And if you want a really really really good strop compound. Get a smooth strop like a horse leather on and some Hand American brand .5 micron diamond spray. It's literally amazing. I can get hair whittling edges and once I sharpen a new blade I basically never have to sharpen again I only use the strop. The diamond spray is fine enough for a great edge yet aggressive enough to repair damage on the blade. Highly recommended.

The hardest thing for me about sharpening is being patient. It's very easy to go to the coarsest stone and take a bunch of steel off the blade, when all you're really doing is losing edge surface and reducing the life of your knife. I like it that you started off with the strop and the fine stone. If that's all your knife needed, and you were hacking a log, then our EDC blades really shouldn't need anything more aggressive. Love the new video studio! :')

I work at Sandvik
Steel and am making this material come true. I can honestly say this material will hold its edge for longer than most steels, and I know why! :)

Seems like a great knife.. I think I almost like the belt strap better.. but that's just me.
I need to get a sharpening system.. but things keep coming up.
Thanks for the video

Great vid. It reminds me of the tests Blunthruth used to do. He was great. One thing he did that was interesting he used paracord. If it popped it cleanly he assumed it was sharp. Check his old videos. You did a great job on the test. It would give anyone seeing hte video a good assessment of the steel.
Hairy arms means higher level of testosterene, which translates to drinking more beer, buying more guns/knives and a lot more hell raising. I have the same disease,

Very nice man. 14C28N is good stuff for the money. Sharpens up very well as you can plainly tell. In many ways I find ease of sharpening more important than edge retention.

That 14C28N is impressive. When your vid first started it remineded me of Blunttruth4U. Don't know if you ever saw any of his vids but they were great knife reviews. Unfortunately he's in prison for awhile. Great video you did.

The diamond spray was a real turning point for me.
For the first time I am getting edges that will cut into skin by simply sliding a finger down the blade.
The stones and my Wicked Edge get used much less often.
Grab a Kangaroo leather strop while you are at it. :)
Chefsknivestogo has it all. :)

Hey Crocket, check out a guy on YT... virtuovice. He is I believe Japanese and he shows in depth how to use stones to do full high convex and turns out some wicked sharp knives. He also processes his 70 plus per year deer kills in the field for we to see. thanks for mini review. Another knife you and Nutn have convinced me to pick up.

I'm a kershaw guy too. The shallot is what turned me on to them.

I have the Buck Vantage Avid in 14C28N and it's one of my easiest to sharpen and hardest to dull blades. Personally I'm more a fan of this than 8Cr13Mov and Aus8. 154CM only beats it (in my opinion) due to its higher rust resistance.
