A close friend has just sold a 98 Mercedes 200 with 125, 000 kilometres with absolutely no faults . He thought that it might start to get expensive to maintain in the near future ! He bought a 2019 VW 1.4 tsi . I don't have the heart to tell him . . .

I had w126 380SE that I drove over 700k miles. Coast to coast several times. Incredibly nice to drive. great efficiency from the small block V8, adequate power and sufficient top end. Miss that one.

Was gonna add that before the 2000s accountants and marketing teams, the products were the advertisements of the world.

Engineering has a much bigger role because an underperforming car meant less sales overall and in the future.

Nowadays, they just make the car tall, aggressive and force down your throat repeating ads.

I'd like to point out two additional things:

1. Back in the day they didn't have as good machines to ensure a part is just as strong or precise as they want so they gave them more room for error. That is one reason why very often the parts are extremely durable

2. Replacement parts were often genuine or high quality. Today you can choose between 13€ for a ball joint from a brand you've never heard of (probably from china) or you can pay 50€ for oem replacement, genuine high quality parts. Now this goes for everything, not just ball joints. Somewhere along the line someone is going to cut corners and it breaks faster and likely also puts more stress on other parts as well.

The cars in the past were designed to last, I saw many 80s/70s Mercedes care with more then a million km and they looked and drove like new

My dad’s 190E rode better than every other car I’ve ever ridden in; railroad tracks felt like the equivalent of sidewalk cracks, soft and yet still very sporty too

A car can still run just as long today as it did back then, you just have to pay more attention and look after the vehicle better than before, the machines and overall construction have become much more modern and complex. A large engine that is not tortured by normal use and is looked after will last for decades.

But what is it like these days? People want a lot of power with low consumption, use their cars as if they were tanks and don't know anything about looking after them.

Just changing all the fluids and oils regularly can work wonders. Use them sensibly and the car will last forever.

Warranty is a gamble for manufacturers.
They test WHILE the customer owns the car.
If nothing breaks, good.
If something breaks, they spend a little money to fix it but its still a plus for them.
If something major breaks, its a loss for them.
Also, they can say we have long warranty for marketing reasons.

Actually, when Mercedes sold this particular model, when the customer asked why there is no warranty, Mercedes would say that your car is so reliable it won’t need a warranty 💀

All of those and some early 2000s Mercs were pretty solid like W210, W211 E Class models

Mercedes Benz from the 80s and 90's were always really amazing cars. Even today it is an amazing car, and thank you for German engineering!!

its so dumb that car manufacturers make "eco friendly cars" that dont last long so customers buy more cars, and the brands get away with it because its "eco friendly". It would be cheaper for the customer and better for the enviroment(long term) if more car brands made more reliable cars and focused on longevity. Its also the customers problems too because they are willing to cough up a ton of money for a newer car.

Today we have laptops on the wheels not driving machines, nothing can be repaired every thing have to be replaced. Automobile industry this days focus on profit not cars reliability
