A "real" train uses a solid axle with conical wheels. Because it's a solid axle, the wheels spin at the same RPM, but the conical profile adjusts the wheel diameter on the fly, giving the whole thing dynamic stability on the track. Putting rail wheels on a car isn't the same thing at all. Without a solid axle, the wheels are free to spin at different RPM. The wheel flanges may prevent derailment, but there's no dynamic stability. This is why the vibration is so much worse than a normal train.

I think the just-a-man and the editor of Rail Express magazine were quite brave. That cut-down caravan was pretty bouncy at speed and if it had derailed I'm not sure those harness installations or those roll bars would have been all that helpful.
