We don't blame the Dutch police for wanting to drive something fun.

Join Jeremy Clarkson, Richard Hammond and James May as they travel across the globe on their Grand Tour. A show about adventure, excitement and friendship… as long as you accept that the people you call friends are also the ones you find extremely annoying. Sometimes it’s even a show about cars, reviewing Italian classics, hot hatchbacks, muscle cars, pick-up trucks, luxury vehicles and more. There’s something for everyone (If you like middle-aged men doing things with cars, then this is the show for you!)

Prime Video has thousands of popular movies and TV shows, including award-winning Amazon Originals, plus live sport and more. All included with Prime!

If you could choose a sports car to drive for work, what would you pick?

That is the equivalent of " yes mom, I need the 4090ti for my homeworks!"

I once had a French brother-in-law, who didn't want to believe the National Police, drove around in a Porsche, he laughed at us, until he came across a police Porsche on the highway, you should have seen the look on his face 😄

I was privileged to actually drive such a 911 from 1975 until 1996. That was the year that the 911 said goodbye to the Motorway Police in the Netherlands. For over 30 years we were King of the road. And I'm proud of that! 👍👍👍👍❤❤❤

To add to the introduction story: yes the Dutch police in Holland like everywhere also used local produced cars for the police, they used the Volvo 343 a lot which is the last car designed by DAF (as DAF 77) before the takeover from Volvo, and manufactured in Eindhoven. The Porches were exclusively for highway patrol.

I remember having toy police cars as a child, which were indeed Porsches. It never occurred to me until now that it is indeed a bit unusual.

The fun part was that they drove with the roof down during winter time :-) I’m a 67 year old Dutchman and we all loved these Highway Patrol cars.

True, I got stopped by one for speeding in my truck in the 80's, my excuse was that I was trying to get to the ferry on time, he let me go! The Dutch are brilliant!

My dad who served in the highway patrol in the 60's and 70's and had a lot of fun and action driving that Porsche, even got married in one.

American here. The Michigan State Police had a Camaro in the early 90s. Some departments down south have some amazing cars, but this story is brilliant! BBQ-flavored salute to the people that made that happen!

The reverse thing is partly true too. Look up the old Dutch reverse racing. It's mind blowing.

A lot of European countries should probably use Porsches. The French could use them for efficiently backing up during retreats. In Poland, Porsche's history speaks for itself. I mean back in the 30s Porsches raced through the entire country in days; the criminals would have no chance.
Edit: Mr. Nice pointed out that spell check betrayed me. I have since edited this.

A few years ago I spoke to an 90-year old lady who used to work at the ministry of traffic and waterstate, She told me how the Dutch alcohol in traffic law was made. "The limit of alcohol you could have had and still be able to react safely was not known in those days, so we had to figure that out for ourselves. So a few collegues volounteered to do the drinking. But we didn't have any alcohol at our office. So the whole team went down to the neighbourhood pub nearby the Ministry on a friday afternoon to investigate how much alcohol one could drink at maximum in order to still be able to safely drive. And through this experiment it was concluded that the limitwas 0, 8 promille. The amount of two bottles of beer." This happened somewhere during the sixties...

Hammond is lucky to be alive, but I think WE are even more lucky he's still around.

That's like when you were persuading your dad as a kid to buy you something (like a game or a computer etc.) . "Dad you can do homework faster and more efficiently, it also boosts your confidence."
