Finding the rate of change from a word problem

👉 Learn how to find the rate of change from word problems. The rate of change is the rate at which the the y-value is changing with respect to the change in x-value. To determine the rate of change between two points, we just need to extract the coordinate points of the points. Then, the rate of change is the quotient of the difference between the y-value and the difference between the x-values. i.e. rate of change = (y2 - y1) / (x2 - x1).

I’m honestly getting upset with the students talking. They need to be quiet and take advantage of a great teacher trying to teach them.

Your students remind me of me in my Calculus class that I have to go back to on the 7th of Jan. 2013. So I thank you for breaking it down for this confused senior at John Jay High School in San Antonio Texas.

Say the question wants you to make a linear equation relating to the number of pounds to the number of years since 1986... how would you write that?

Wait I think I got it? I don’t know but it looks right, thanks. I had to watch a few of these specific videos a few times to get it but I got it, so thanks again

Couldn't you just use the y(2) - y(1) / x(2) - x(1) method? The answer i got was 7/15 which is just the flipped version of 15/7.

Thanks for posting this video. I understand it in general. But my problems are quite different I have to do for my Honors Algebra 2 summer packet. They only give me one number for each. Thanks though!
