First and foremost, a nonprofit organization must exist to help improve some cause. Examples of such causes can be to help a community, homelessness, nature, human rights, animal rights, or a number of other causes.

The other thing that makes an nonprofit organization is the tax expemption they get from the IRS. Additionally, there are some restrictions about how a nonprofit must distribute its profit.

I have an idea to help unfortunate kids with clothes preferably jeans. I have no idea where to start and if it's really a non-profit. I would like to start at my son's school to partner with teachers to identify kids in need and give them jeans. Any suggestions?

Seems that a Cooperative would better fix the surplus revenue/wage inequality issue, but I am a fan of nonprofits being required to serve a specific need as it's main priority.

Edit: though I suppose an organization could be both a nonprofit and a co-op.
