When Cuban pilot Orestes Lorenzo defected to the U.S. in a MiG-23 on March 20th, 1991 it was a courageous act that gave him his freedom. But he wasn’t content to be free knowing his family was still in Cuba. So, a little more than a year later he flew back to Cuba, this time in a Cessna 310, and made a daring rescue that finally reunited his family. #shorts

Amazing both the Mig and the Cessna were able to get airborne with carrying all that weight of his huge brass balls.

I was working at that airbase-N.A.S. Boca Chica- Orestes Lorenzo landed the MiG 23! I had worked as a civilian fuel truck operator, the plane had landed a few hours before I came to work. Weeks later the Cuban authorities were able to claim their plane! They laughed when they noticed that the plane was covered in U.S. Navy company stickers all over their MiG 23 Flogger! The plane was refueled by the U.S. Navy(we had to gravity feed fuel because the pressure fitting wasn't interchangeable) and the plane took off and did a Barrow roll once it was airborne.

Something like this had happened to me in 1970, escaping communist regime. I thought about approaching Hollywood people. This could be a great movie. Well, there are millions of people leaving damned communist countries, even this minute. Because if there isn't any freedom, well the best thing is to escape, run as.far as you can. That's we in Canada and USA are blessed to live free, democratic society to enjoy all God's given freedoms and to live so good.
God Bless America !

Thank goodness his family weren't killed while he was away for over a year

Orestes is a great friend of mine. His family, his in-laws all welcomed me into their homes as if I was family. A true patriot. 300 usd in his pocket and turned it into a multi million dollar construction company. If you go to Disney, you'll see his work.

The only person known to have escaped Cuba twice while shaming the dictators for their obvious air defense incompetence. Very lucky person.

Courageous Cuban!! He risked his life and his family’s life. They all would have been killed by the Cuban trial court.

A brave man, 1991 seems so long ago in images but like yesterday from memory. A sure sign of getting old lol.

I sure hope we were smart enough to sign him up for our armed forces. He's smart, courageous, and no doubt, a fighter.
