Unlock the power of Parallel Compression!

First, group all your drum tracks onto a bus channel and insert a compressor.

Then, go for a fast attack, medium release, and crank up the ratio.

Fine-tune the threshold for 5 to 15dB of compression.

Once set, don’t touch the controls—simply raise the fader for a fuller, richer sound.

Basically what you’re doing is adding a suped up version of whatever you send of your drum kit to it and blending that into the more natural sounding kit. Fast attack and fast release makes it sound like there is this after shock effect behind each hit as the delay of release throwing the sound back at you after it starts far away from the fast attack comes flying back at you.

Especially in real kit, a better way to do this is send each part of the kit separately. This way you can control how much of the signal you want to send. Sometimes cymbals can get washy and loud.

Not just compression but any processing can be in parallel. Processing in parallel refers to duplicating the signal, applying effects to one of them and then combining it with the original to taste. Guys stop over complicating it…you don’t need "a SSL compressor or something similar" to do this idk why he would say that. Also be cautious about people that throw around with db values, even db ranges

This is the best video on parallel compression I’ve ever seen.
Quick, fast and straight to the point.
Well done!

This is the first thing I put on a return channel.

I always wondered what Super Hans was up too these days…. 😀

The attack should be as slow as possible or else you will miss all the smack from the transients. It’s slow attack, fast release at 4:1.

I thought that was rely compression..??
Isn't parallel processing when it goes back into the same channel??

Forgot to talk about the make-up gain. Use it to compensate for the high ratio gain reduction.

How do you avoid this causing phase issues?

Could parallel compression potentially cause the same squeezing effect on other instruments as simply increasing the volume of drums?

What's the use of sending 1 bus to another bus to do processing? Just use 1 bus?, send drums to a bus with a compressor to do processing

Should I keep the kick separate to the rest of the drums when making EDM? Or should it be bundled in with the rest of them?
