The two most important things to be a good BIM Manager: time and experience.

Never rush into becoming one - it is so much more than a software based role. I believe that BIM Managers should have general mastery on software their company works in, however they also need to be experts in complex workflows and coordination methods, as well as software/hardware selection.

Hi Balkan,
I believe as my position is what you are talking about, it's much more than what you described. It's definitely not all about Revit, the second important software is Navisworks, and many other come along such as synchro.
And also as Arkan said one should understand the whole construction process as he will be managing the construction of the project through BIM, and he will manage the BIM coordination team as well with all engineering departments. Also there are BIM standards that one should learn depending on location to be able to provide the BEP (Bim Execution Plan). There is a lot to learn about it, it's like a new major by itself

You have to coordinate between all the MEP disciplines. You don't only have to know about the program, but also about construction, the coordination, the complete process of different BIM implementations.

Thanks Balkan. Absolutely, BIM Management involves a very broad set of skills beyond Revit (or whatever primary BIM weapon of choice).

Actually I am a general manager in construction company and I am working on adapting to BIM. In my opinion it is so important for BIM manager to have a complete understanding of the whole construction processes and the methodology that is adopted in certain region. In addition he has to have full understanding of the relationship between different disciplines like MEP, structure, HSE, and architecture

In my mind it's a project manager with BIM knowledge, maybe an extra PM responsibility a CAD technician has.
The thing is that BIM managers don't necessarily need to do any drafting/modelling, and i love making drawings and working in 3D, so that's what is keeping me from following a BIM manager career, but maybe in the distant future i'll do that if it has a better compensation than CAD/BIM career.

For the last 2 years i have worked at a leading corporation in the auto industry, from the experience i have gained so far, i dare to say that BIM is the future of architecture.

Back in our day, 27 good years ago, a BIM manager is called Project Information Manager or CAD manager. One difference I noticed is that Project Information Managers make the 3D/2D work without them and not because of them.

Hello. Thanks for video. Also for a BIM Manager is important IFC export and collaboration and all of documentation linked to BIM like BIM project execution planning.

Some good info here, but was very high level, no mention of ISO 19650 which would be the main standard that defines BIM processes and protocols

I think in a BIM manager role you need to be good with software maybe an expert in a few. The ability to identify other experts and lean on their specialties and point them in the right direction. because there is no way to know everything. Overall I think understanding how to think holistically, if xxx is implemented what variables would effect what, what are possible unknown effects. Also, the ability to learn fast, generally leveraging other software workflows to fill in gaps of knowledge when learning new software. A big one is working with people, understanding leadership. This may vary from firm to firm Contractor or design and sizes, big or small. I would say your example is more of a BIM Coordination position description.
