This reminds me of my brother in law. When I first met him, he lived in a squat, was fresh out of college and selling socks at the market.
In 10 years (after a few business failures, he hit big) and he was worth over 28 million USD.
The whole family went on holiday and I had the opportunity to observe him more closely and began to see why he had became so successful:
As we had arrived at the hotel late, we all went to bed. He said he was going to the bar for one drink. The next morning, at breakfast everyone knew him and said Hi as he passed.
He was friendly, funny and quite unassuming - he also spoke to people as if they knew a lot more than him and he learnt something from them. This I found out was an act, as I saw his holiday reading material - he had all the latest business magazines, books etc.
In addition to his fantastic people skills, despite his early business failures, he never complained, he moved on and always, always knew he would make it and be rich.

One thing I learned is that suffering and pain are like seeds that you plant which you later sow. Every single disgusting, uncomfortable and or brutal experience I have went through brought back massive dividends down the road. Sometimes as long as 2-3 years. The matter of the fact is that you have to get out there and get your ass kicked, get up and get it kicked again. Slowly you'll get resilient and learn how to kick ass yourself.
