Edmonton will see fewer temporary foreign workers

As Canada cuts down how many people from other countries can be inside its borders, Edmonton will be one of the first cities to notice the changes when they take effect.

Big mistake allowing 807, 296 INTERNATIONAL STUDENTS to get open work permit . I have co employees who got permanent full time job whose husband is International student. They arrived in Canada 4 months ago.

It's about time! Have you been to any fast food, coffee outlets lately? Majority employ immigrants of older age compared to young Canadians looking for their first job. Young Canadians don't have a fighting chance. Period!

I’m so sick of the argument that we “need foreign workers to do the jobs Canadians don’t want to do”. It’s b.s.

Before we had this huge influx in immigration these jobs got done. Fast food restaurants, taxi companies, long haul truck driving, pharmacies, fruit pickers etc ALL had staff/workers before mass immigration.

Canadians filled these jobs. We DID do these jobs…..as teens/young adults we picked strawberries and tobacco and apples in the summer ……we worked in restaurants…….we worked in factories (Canada actually had a bunch of them), we did everything that the economy required.

Teenagers, students, adults……anyone could find a job and employers would have to compete to attract good, hard workers.

Working in a fast food restaurant, gas station, convenience store (entry level, low skill jobs) was mostly done by students (except for managers). It was a job that gave youth experience and something to put on a resume, and then they would eventually move on to another higher paying job that would give them more hours.

Now people expect these jobs to “pay a living wage” to support an entire family on…..it’s just unrealistic.

We have flooded the country with so many people that employers no longer have to pay well, or treat their staff well, provide advancement opportunities or give steady raises because there is always someone willing to come from a country making $5 a day that think $15/hr sounds like paradise. Not to mention the government actually in enticing employers to hire foreign bs actual citizens.

It needs to stop. We don’t need to import people from India, or China or the Philippines (or wherever) in order to drink coffee, get a drive through burger or fill a prescription.
It’s nothing against these lovely, hard working people. It’s just that we need to ensure Canadian citizens already living here can find decent paying jobs.

During and right after the pandamic, people were abusing customer facing staff. Many left their jobs because of this, and there was a huge shortage of staff. That's why companies started abusing this program. We need a balance. Many Canadians don't want to work these jobs anyways.
