Is it okay to try to induce labor at 37 weeks?

You asked a great question. You mentioned that you're about 37 weeks along and you want to know if it's okay to do things to kind of encourage labor at this point. You're right, 37 weeks is full term but babies born at 37 weeks oftentimes have issues with breastfeeding, they don't eat as well, they have issues with jaundice because their livers are still a little bit immature, and sometimes have breathing issues and end up in the newborn ICU. So as far as encouraging delivery at 37 weeks, we definitely don't want to do that. It would be best to wait until about 39 weeks. At that point most babies are mature and do well and any contractions that you have at that point, like if you start contracting, walk and do other things to potentiate the contractions. But at 37 weeks it would still be best to not do anything to encourage labor. Now, if you start to have regular contractions, meaning every 3-5 minutes and they're increasing in intensity, if you feel like your water is broken, if you have any bleeding, or if you don't feel your baby move as much as usual it would be best to go to labor and delivery and get checked out. Congratulations ahead of time on the birth of your baby and if you have any other questions for me feel free to ask them on our Facebook page and recommend us to your friends and family too.
