The Dirty Mobile Phone Industry - We confront the major names in the smartphone industry with the realities that they would like to keep hidden.

The Dirty Mobile Phone Industry (2014)
Director: Martin Boudot
Genre: Documentary
Country: France
Language: English
Also Known As: Cash Investigation: The Real Price Of Your Mobile Phone

Synopsis:
A mobile phone is sold every 57 seconds meaning that there are now more mobile phones on the planet than toothbrushes. We investigated the shameful secrets of the multinationals who produce our mobile phones. They are the big winners of the mobile revolution as their profits explode but what is the human and environmental cost in the production countries of China and the Congo?

We bring exclusive footage from inside Chinese factories where scores of children are working long hours under arduous conditions. The multinationals claim they are doing all they can, but these shocking images say otherwise. In Africa the mines that retrieve minerals essential to components in our smartphones are dangerous and unregulated. Injuries and deaths occur regularly amongst workers just desperate to support their families. Whilst in China the environmental damage has scarred the landscape, emptied a village and possibly caused severe illness among the population.

I don't understand why people are complaining in the comment section that this video is too old. It's an eye opener anyhow.

I come from China, and I would like to share my opinion. Although this video appears to have been shot many years ago, the situation is still the same today. However, nowadays, people under the age of 16 are not allowed to work in factories. This was actually quite common in the past, and I have worked in five different factories in China. I remember my youngest colleague, who was only 14 years old, and he had dropped out of middle school to work.

Watching this eye opening documentary on a smartphone and as the clip starts talking about the terrible working conditions in Samsung factories around the world, an ad from Samsung comes on. This is sad but kudos to the journalist and the team for this bravery and hardwork! Stay safe!

I cried!! Watching it on an S24 feels criminal! I have worked as a factory auditor for years, but these working conditions are inhuman to be modest..
Fantastic piece of journalism! I will reduce my consumption of electronics!

For starters stop swapping for new models. Stick with one model till it dies. I've got mine for 6 years now and still don't feel any need for upgrade.

Speaking as a 12 year Communication Tech. We are under paid aswell. Not nearly as bad as these people. This is horrible treatment and abuse. I feel bad for these workers. They deserve much better. I can say the same with being a prospector myself. This is atrocious.

An updated version of this documentary would only make it more depressing. So many more mobile phone giants now, sales also went up. Competition keeps getting stronger, more exploitation frfr
