There is a lot going on behind the shiny veil of innovation and flagship phones. The hidden impact of the smartphone industry can no longer be ignored. Phones are not born in the store, nor do they somehow disappear when you throw them out. So what is really going on behind the scenes and why is it mostly kept under wraps?

Answers in our video above.

______________

Why don’t more of us recycle our smartphones since there are so many valuable minerals inside?

Well, they are designed for use, but not for reuse or recycling. That’s why it is hard to open them, repair them or remove broken parts. No surprise, this all centers on earning more financial profit and that creates an endless cycle of demanding and consuming more and more.

So please: think twice when you want to buy a new phone. Do you really need a new phone? The truth is: The most sustainable phone, is the one in your pocket - make it last! And if you’re in the market for a new one, Fairphone is your sustainable alternative.

----------------------

Since 2013, Fairphone is on a mission to create a more sustainable and ethical smartphone.
The modular, repairable Fairphone 3 champions longer-lasting design, fair materials, good working conditions, and the reduction of e-waste. We want to help the entire electronics industry to do better.

By creating more sustainable smartphones, we’re demonstrating the endless possibilities for a fairer future, for everyone! It’s no secret, we’re out to change the world. Fairphone puts people and the planet first.

Take a look behind the screen and learn more about the hidden stories you’re holding hand. On this YouTube Channel you can check out how-to’s about our Fairphones, tutorials and behind the scenes videos.

It would be great if Fairphone can be available, officially, available in Brazil

It would also be great if we have a "Fairbook", a Laptop made in the shapes of Fairphone

I bought my last two phones used, at a very good price. If I don't get a good deal on an used phone next time, I'll get a Fairphone.

I wholeheartedly agree with the message. Heck, I've been supporting you since your very first phone and still tell people around me how great you are. But I don't like the negative tone of this video, which, in my experience, tends to be a turn off for the people you want to convince. Then again, I'm no marketing expert and I might be completely wrong. But this is not the video of yours I'll be sharing. Even though I do agree with the message. Oh well... Thanks for all your efforts! I do appreciate them.

I think if you guys can make a phone with a camera as good as the competition, you'll get more adopters, is it a software or a hardware problem ? if it's a software problem you should think about opensourcing your camera app, and get more help from the opensource community.

Hi, thank you for this video.
Nevertheless the main reason most smartphones are disposed of is the obsolescence of their system : they get to slow as apps and operating systems updates demand increasing intern storage and processor performance : How do you plan to bypass this tremendous issue ?? Google and apple systems have gained so much popularity/monopoly among users and developpers that dropping android is impossible (windows phones failed for instance).

I also wonder what is your business model : the fairphone's cost is average, but the goal of a loyal customer (to fairphone) is to keep it as long as possible (let's say 10 years). So you make drastically less profit than other companies whose phones last 2 years (and so sells 5 times more phones to their loyal customer).
How can the fairphone be so affordable, and your company still make profits ?!

recycle process in several countries is non existend. We have a few on ALL electronic devices and therefor you can give it without any additional fee back to recycle. Its not only about a good product, all countries need to start to have proper ways for recycling all things without huge costs or taxes on it.

I would love to have a fairbook but please wait with that until arm chips are a bit more popular. And PLEASE FOR THE LOVE OF GOD make it modular with phisical switches to turn on and off the camera and microphone then also make the ssd (I dont think hd is needed) easy to replace I personally like to switch between win and linux! And one other question is ther3 going to be mhl support for my pf3? I really would like to usemy monitor sometimes to display my screen!
