The Awakening (TTBB) - Joseph Martin, b. 1959
Men of the Dallas Chamber Choir

I dreamed a dream.
A silent dream,
Of a land not far away.
Where no birds sang,
No steeples rang,
And teardrops fell like rain.

I dreamed a dream
A silent dream
Of a land so filled with pride
That ev'ry song,
Both weak and strong,
(Withered) withered and died.

I dreamed a dream.

No alleluia,
Not one hosanna,
No song of love,
No lullaby.

And no choir sang to change the world.
No pipers played; no dancers twirled.

I dreamed a dream,
A silent dream.

Silent. Silent....

Awake! Awake! Awake! Awake!
Soli Deo Gloria! Awake! Awake!

Awake! Awake, my soul, and sing!
The time for praise has come.
The silence of the night has passed;
A new day has begun.

Let music never die in me!
Forever let my spirit sing!
Wherever emptiness is found,
Let there be joy and glorious sound.

Let music never die in me!
Forever let my spirit sing!
Let all our voices join as one
To praise the Giver of the song!

Awake! Awake!
Let music live!

-Joseph Martin

I sang tenor 1 in this song and it was a really magical experience especially the no alleluia and the soli deo gloria part... this is an amazing choir to listen to.

Best performance of this song I’ve heard on YouTube. Your conductor really has the sensitivity of dynamics and all your men are astoundingly amazing.

My Choir Teachers final piece for the rest of her long 40 year career at my highschool was the most important thing to her. After almost all year of looking, her and I stumbled apon this song and starting sobbing! She wanted this song to be performed as her last Harah! Also to remind her students and HERSELF to "let music never die". During the performance it was difficult to keep my composure watching my now retired director start to cry as the song reached its climax. A magnificent and passionate piece that will always have a very special place in my heart!!

Complete. Perfection. Makes me miss when I sang this TTBB, but the clarity, the tone, it was everything in sync! Just amazing!

The voices are impeccable! Complete perfection. but this song deserves a full orchestra and choir.

Also, to the choir director. What a job you did to make these men sound like one voice in each section. Brava!

12 people achieving those overtones and that intonation is astoundingly perfect. I'm absolutely floored by the level of talent and the work rate of this choir. Bravo! This may very well be my favorite recording of what is my favorite Men's Chorale piece.

This is my favorite performance of probably my favorite song! The dynamics, phrasing, and diction were all outstanding!! My favorite part was 2:13, the pianissisimo, the eeriness of the accidental blends perfectly with the piano! I sincerely thank for this beautiful performance

I've performed this song in a large chorus, chamber choir, and quartet. I would have loved to be able to perform this with the conductor here. Such a wonderful understanding of the push and pull of emotion and dynamics. So well done. <3

One of my fondest high school memories is of singing this song in a TTBB arrangement at Nebraska’s annual men’s choir festival. 600-some voices from age 14 to 70, all joining as one to praise the Giver of the song. Ten years later and it still gives me chills, and this is the best recording of it I’ve found yet.

This is one of my favorite coral pieces. I did it in grade 9, and I still find it really powerful. This rendition is truly beautiful, and these men are incredibly talented. Thank you.
