My son got me that book as a Christmas present. It is a treasure. I actually enjoyed the translation of Beowulf in it, but you are right that the big draw is Tolkien's commentary on the translation. In school, I always enjoyed the scholar's publications on translations of texts as they were made, and the presence here of Tolkien's thought process and engagement with the text while translating is a treat.

The sound in your new location actually seems a bit clearer and sharper in this video.

Tolkien's translation was written in the early 1920s
so they are very early in his oeuvre.
I suspect he did it to help with his teaching of English
at various universities
as he started his career as an academic.
It likely wasn't written for publication.

Great video, David. I can only imagine how a satisfactory Tolkien translation might have turned out.
