They had 2 bottles of bear spray.... both emptied.... if you rely on bear spray to save you, you're more naive than my 6 year old. And this attack proves that.

I can't even imagine the scene when this all went down. You are pretty much done if a grizzly decides to attack.

Dont go into their homes. Especially now right before winter.

"Experienced hikers" who brought a dog with them during the beginning of fall where bears are getting ready for hibernation. Food hungry bears will be more sensitive / investigatory to certain smells like from humans or dogs and since they'd have certain territories and be territorial when it comes to food - it is really dangerous to go out into the wild pre-hibernation.

The bear was predatory? You mean we aren't even safe in the wilderness anymore? What has this world come to?

Their dog pisses off a grizzly bear then leads him back to you.

OMG, never, EVER hike in bear country with a dog. This is so heartbreaking. I know that area and have hiked it a number of times. My partner and I always hiked with a Garmin Emergency alert device. It is rare and unusual. I am so very sorry this happened. So very, VERY tragic.

Have a friend that worked as a geologist in bc he never went anywhere without his 44 revolver. This is the wild and should be treated as such.

This is very unfortunate but we have to remember that everyone should know these few factors when hiking in bear county: late September, early October, bears are bulking up for winter, everything is food.
2) after all these forest fires most of the wildlife had to relocate, they are probably tired and scared.
3) grizzly are extremely territorial and love to fight for it, if you see traces of bear activity, you should move somewhere else (bear droppings, scratched trees, berry bushes torn or stomped)
4) always carry bear mace for each hikers
I know it sounds bad, but if you are not careful, that area is full of dangerous animals, you can be lucky many times, like I was, but you only need to be unlucky once and it’s over.

if you don't have a high powered rifle with you then you're not at the top of the food chain. Don't go into into the bush defenseless when Bears are doing their last feeding push before hibernation. Play stupid games, win stupid prizes.

Sad all-around. Sad for the couple, their dog and the Bear.

We saw a Griz in Glacier NP from within 100 yards. It’s a massive and beautiful animal.

I can see the dog creating an issue. No control of your pet. Was the dog on a leash? The bear gets threatened. The couple try to get the dog away from the bear and then they get caught up in the situation.

This may sound callous but if you play in their territory, you may pay the price.

As bear go into their last feeding frenzy before winter, we have a lot of smaller and mom bears coming right into town. My theory is for their safety from the very large bears. And they had a DOG? A canine? Uh, no.

I used to work for a contractor based in Calgary and spent lots of times working in Banff and Canmore. I never had an encounter with a grizzly in all the years I worked up there, but they were always in the back of my mind. After listening to the audio of Timothy Treadwell getting eaten alive by a grizzly in Alaska, I never wanted to get close to them.

To a bear, a dog is a wolf. It is that simple. An attack cannot be prevented by keeping the dog leashed. Both can smell the other from incredible distances. Just keep dogs out. It's a matter of life or death.

Don't take your dog into bear country. It's that simple.

very unfortunate and rare event ...by the sounds of it a predatory attack at night, pretty much nothing you can do about that dogs or no dogs, the city folks down below have no idea what they talking about ... I spent countless hours in the back country with my dogs and had several run in with bears, they usually run away if you give them space .
