They adopted each other. Frank was Carl's little brother he never got to meet and Carl became the father Frank lost.

I wasn't interested in this movie when it came out. But once I watched it I realized just how few really really good actors there were in the world. It is by far some of the best acting ever. Billy Bob Thornton as himself never even comes to mind. Carl doesn't look like him sound like him.. nothing. It's truly an amazing performance from him . But then everyone in it was perfectly done. One of a kind .

That simple exchange kills me every time.

Karl saw in Frankie the little brother he never had. And like the tragidy that happened to his little brother, Karl needed to do the right thing this time and protect Frankie.

1:09 "Looky right there. I do believe you're right..."
I feel like Billy Bob improvised that bit of dialogue. Lucas (Frank) was professional enough to stay in character. But, notice the pause and how he looks up at Karl. Maybe it's just me🤷‍♂️

Cinematic gold right there. While there are other scenes out there that are truly incredible, I honestly cannot think of one that is better than this one.

When Karl rebukes Frank, in response to him saying he hates Doyle and wants to kill him, he doesn't ever take the angle that Frank's anger at his abuse is invalid or unjustified; that he should respect Doyle due to his experience or age or whatever. He always says something along the lines of "you're just a boy." He's been on the other side of that fence. He knows what it's like to be so consumed by pain that you can't but let it out on the person causing it. Above all, he wishes that he had had the opportunity to be a child, to be innocent and happy.

I gotta say this movies a hit, I love what he and his mom do for him, plus the church and how he made sure the family would stay safe. Kid's acting is great, u see how he's engaged by faciel expressions, looking into ones eyes while being talked to, tilting the head Wich shows he's taking a moment to think of what's being said and relating to the other ones feelings...Ya it's not that fake, just a well mannered character wish all kids were sweet like him😂

You can sense that the kid that plays Frank is genuinely laughing when Billy Bob (Karl) points out a pecker in the potted meat. It was probably improvised and he wasn't expecting it.
