Why Did George Lucas Sell Star Wars? #Shorts

It’s now been a decade since George Lucas sold Lucasfilm to Disney. While many at the time were happy to see him step out of the Star Wars business, it seems many people now wish he would return to the galaxy far, far away.

What prompted him to make the decision to sell?

In various interviews, he has revealed that there were additional Star Wars stories to be told, but estimated that telling them would take at least ten years. And, at the age of 70, he wasn’t sure he would be around to complete them. He also wanted to take on more experimental projects, which typically underperform at the box office. As most of his films leading up to the sale of the company had lost money, he did not feel it was fair to his employees.

No matter how you feel about past and current films, it's hard to look at photos of George on the set of current Star Wars projects and not feel a little bit nostalgic.

His mistake was not selling his masterpiece, it was WHO he was selling it to

I've never met George Lucas. Don't know him personally. Have never even spoken to the man. But I do know Star Wars is dead without him.

He needs to take better care of his health. I saw a video of him having trouble walking on his own. I wonder if he has neuropathy or foot ulcers.

He saw the garbage Filoni was making so he pulled out. Filoni proceded to make Ashoka a god and ruin star wars.

I always assumed, at least in part, he did it so it would continue. I don't know if any of his family were prepared, or ever expected, to curate the Star Wars IP, like Christopher Tolkien did for Lord of the Rings, or who else at LucasFilms could, if something unexpected happened to him, and while he might have been getting tired of making Star Wars, or catching flak for what he made, he wanted to make sure someone would be there to keep making it. Disney wasn't going anywhere, they could afford it, they were powerful within the entertainment industry, and often had a good track record with writing good stories, and using elements of history/mythology to loosely inspire them. He made a lot of money, had freedom to do other things, certainty that his thing had a future, and probably expected to continue to advise.

Nah the it was unfair to his employees thing is bullshit. Shows like the clone wars and the future show rebels were and going to be huge money makers both in just the show itself and merchandise, they just had to stop canceling games like 1313, battlefront 3, and what not. Other games like swtor still bring in massive amounts of money per year enough to keep all of Lucas arts employed. They had plenty of books and comics that many considered cannon to make movies off of (which is what Disney is starting to do since they realized they can't create anything good). Star wars was in a VERY good place still when he sold it arguably the best it's ever been till that point with how diverse the fan base is with the entire star wars universe.

That space between George and Jon Favaroe is ironic.... Dave filoni is the link between Disney and George
