This is exactly what my wife did even though she was only 18 at the time. She followed me across the Pacific to the Philippines then across the Atlantic several times to the mid-East and to the UK and Germany during my 20+ years in the Air Force not to mention a couple of tours in the US. Still together and now in our 70s.

Peggy March went on to have a great career in Europe, singing in many different languages, even Japanese. She won a European music festival in 1977 with one of the most beautiful songs I have ever heard. It's called You and I. You can find it on youtube, by the way.
