Do you put rebar in the concrete lintel you pour or is the concrete strong enough?

The other aspect of Portland cement that gives it a bad name is the amount of energy it takes to produce it, and all the greenhouse gas effects that go with it.

What about the stained and polished concrete floors with radiant heat? Do they release chemicals when heated either by the radiant or sun for passive solar?

Thoughts on the 'springiness' of wood on a concrete slab vs joists? I know many people say working or dancing on a concrete slab is hard on the joints.

What do you suggest for non toxic siding ? I don’t like hardie because I’m sensitive and the house has too many openings. Afraid silicone will get in
What is the best to resist mold and rot but non toxic ? Thank you

Definitely don’t want to breathe the dust, but it is also worth noting that the concrete is potentially harmful when wet. That’s because when water is mixed with the PC, it starts a chemical reaction and produces enough heat that it can burn human skin. It won’t burn like grabbing the stove or sticking a body part in a fire. It’s a sneakier burn.

The other way that cement is harmful is when the excess is washed away. If it gets into waterways (rivers and creeks) before it’s cure, it can have a detrimental effect on the pH of the water, the life of all the critters living in water, and even potentially your wallet. It’s against the law, and people have been fined for it.

While it’s definitely true that a full cure takes 28 days, it’s at like 90% within a few days to a week. While it is possible to maximize the curing process by keeping the concrete wet, most contractors instead apply a curing compound to basically seal the moisture in the mix. On little job, it is also possible to do this by covering with plastic or even saturated towels once the surface is firm.

It’s also worth noting that while Portland cement concrete is the most common concrete, there are other types of concrete using different cements.

This Cob House, I'm wondering what wood you are puting down on the concrete? I know the standared in building is all wood in contact with concrete must be treated... I'm guessing you won't do that? how are you preventing mold when the concrete sweats? thanks
