Great Voyages: Ferdinand Magellan, 'Our One True Guide': The First Circumnavigation of the Globe

Magellan's circumnavigation was a complex event—a feat of navigation and exploration that also saw hardship, shipwreck, and mutiny visited upon the expedition's crew. In a process that would become paradigmatic, Europeans found themselves enmeshed in regional and local politics—a causative element in Magellan's death. Dr. Gallup-Diaz examines the varied and interconnected maritime, cultural, and political factors that came together during Magellan's circumnavigation.

You guys are rude. Have some appreciation for the sharing of this info and subject. Just because it doesn't cover the exact material YOU wanted to hear and have discussed doesn't mean it was trash. I was very happy and excited to hear this lecture and I thought the Dr. did an excellent job. If you don't, make your own video and wow us with your own expertise.

Magellan didn't complete the journey, he died in Phlipinnes, the guy who first circumnavigated the world was the spanish Juan Sebastia Elcano 1519-1521, and the second one as well spanish, Andres de Urdaneta in 1525-1536, who also discovered the return journay, posibly best sailor in history.

It is already 18:18 in UTC+8 and it is now his 500th Death Anniversary! (Tuesday, 3rd of February, 1480-Wednesday, 27th of April, 1521) (Birthplace: Municipality of Sabrosa, Portugal-Deathplace: Island of Mactan, Province of Cebu, Philippines)

Magellan almost cirumnavigated the globe - sailing east to Malacca with the Portuguese in 1511, then west to the Phillipines with the Spanish in 1519. It is doubtful he sailed to the Spice Islands, which lie just to the south of then Phillipines, with his mate Francisco Serrao after the seige of Malacca. Magellan did acquire a manservant, whom he called Enrique, while in Malacca, took him back to Portugal then onto the Phillipines. When they arrived at Cebu it turned out Enrique could speak the local dialect, suggesting he was from there - that would, ironically, make him the first person to circumnavigate the globe, rather than Magellan or Del Cano

Even though he is nervous to be saying um I'll keep listening through. He's intelligent but shy I guess.

I think that many people commenting on these lectures are expecting to see documentaries (with a narrator stating hard "facts", and lots of editing) not intellectual talks

They should watch national geographic instead of coming here

The first to circumnavigate the Earth were Juan Sebastian Elcano and 17 survivers. Magellan had died in Mactan, Philippine islands. Going around the world was not in his plans.

The reason why Magellan called Guam the isle of Thieves is because Magellan and his crew needed food so the Chamorros(local people of Guam and the CNMI) gave them food and in the Chamorro culture back then if you give someone something they expected something in return.

Magellan never did the circumnavigation, Elcano did. Magellan had actually no intention to circumnavigate the world, just to go to the Spice islands and back to Spain, it was Juan Sebastián Elcano, after Magellan's death, who took the decission to keep traveling west and actually succeded leading the expedition home and circumnavigating the world

ferdinand magellan is a great explorer, but he did not circumnavigated the globe because he died in cebu philippines during the fight with visaya's people under the ruler of lapu-lapu. for this reason, ferdinand magellan did not returned to spain, and he did not complete his circumnavigation.

Dr. Gallup-Diaz seems to find Magellan's voyage across the Atlantic toward Brazil, then south the South American coast toward Argentina, while then groping to find a route through the Dragon's Tail (later called the Strait of Magellan) on his way to what was known then as part of the Southern Sea (Pacific Ocean) to be an alternative route toward the Spice Islands. Magellan had no idea that the Pacific Ocean was the vast body of water that killed most of his crew to be anything but a short route the Spice Islands.. Truly that Charles V and his court were completely ignorant of what laid beyond the newly conquered Atlantic Ocean.
No wonder the king of Portugal wanted nothing to do with Magellan's plan when Magellan solicited his help. Magellan presented the king of Spain with an itinerary that was inspired by cartographers of his days based legends of what they thought was the then known Southern Sea. The king fell for it, unfortunately, costing the lives of most of the young sailors who made the voyage with Magellan, including that of the sea master himself. History has been very kind to Magellan given the quixotic nature of his character and the cruelty with which he treated his young sailors, many of whom died of famine, scurvy, and other diseases. The real hero of the story, if that can be anything but survival, goes to Sebastian el Cano, the Spanish young captain who circumnavigated the globe, went on to the Spice Islands, and return to Spain following the shortest route -- straight to the Cape of Good Hope and then up the African coast, despite the dangers posed by Portuguese war vessels..

What a letdown... This lecture of arguably the most interesting explorer of them all was ruined by an overly long and tedious introduction (who cares about terminological hairsplitting, just get on with it!) coupled with some completely unnecessary spoilers (how about leaving some vital facts for the audience to anticipate for the lecture itself?), all before the lecture even began.

The introduction would have been fine for an academic audience less interested in Magellan the man and more interested in the historiography of Magellan, but it was completely overdone for a one-off lecture aimed at a general audience. The previous lecture on Zheng He was much much better done, even though it was shorter, and I hope coming lecture(r)s will take a page from that lecturer's book rather than from this one.

Error is that although there were islands specifically the south were Muslim the islands visited by Magellan were a Hindu type religion. The King that Magellan befriended was a Rajah.
