Macron Condemns Russia's Attack on Mariupol Maternity Hospital

French President Emmanuel Macron on Thursday condemned the Russian airstrike on a Mariupol maternity hospital as a "shameful and amoral act of war".

He was speaking as he arrived to host a summit of European Union heads of state and government at the Versailles Palace, west of Paris.

Macron said he was deeply upset by images showing the use of "lethal weapons... in an indiscriminate manner".

"Nothing justifies" what happened in Mariupol, he added.

The president went on to say he was "very worried and pessimistic" about the war in Ukraine, saying he didn't think a ceasefire "in the coming hours" was unlikely.

Macron said leaders would also discuss the applications of Ukraine, Moldova and Georgia to the EU.
