5 Inventors With Mysterious Inventions Who Strangely Disappeared

Mysterious disappearances often involve individuals whose work defies convention. The perplexing case of Dr. Ning Li, whose groundbreaking research on anti-gravity beguiled and confounded her peers, is one such story.

Dr. Ning Li emigrated from China to the United States in 1983, joining the Center for Space Plasma and Aeronomic Research at the University of Alabama. In the early '90s, her pioneering papers on anti-gravity were met with skepticism, dismissed by many as fanciful science fiction.

Still, Li's theoretical work proposed a specific, practical method for generating an anti-gravity field, a concept that promised transformative applications.

In 1999, Li left academia to found her own company, AC Gravity. To further her research, she secured a significant grant from the Department of Defense, nearly half a million dollars. This pivotal moment marked the beginning of a series of strange and troubling events in her life.

Despite the promising start, AC Gravity never published any of its research. By 2003, Li had vanished from the public eye.

Her last known communication was a private email to colleagues, specifically reporting an experiment that generated “11 kilowatts of output energy.” After this message, she disappeared entirely. Her colleagues continued to send emails, which were marked as read, but no replies ever came.

Rumors and speculation filled the void left by her disappearance. Some suggested she was working under strict confidentiality for NASA or the Department of Defense.

Jack Sarfatti, a fellow scientist, speculated that she had returned to China, now funded by the Chinese government, and was beyond the Pentagon’s reach—a potential national security threat.

In an interview years later, Li’s son recounted a cryptic exchange with his mother. “Mom, do you need to tell me something?” he asked. Her response was as enigmatic as her disappearance: “First off, you don’t know anything. Second off, if you even think you might know something, you forget about it.”

Li’s son recounted how her work had never actually ceased under the Department of Defense, instead becoming classified and shrouded in secrecy, a burden that weighed heavily on her.

Tragedy struck in 2014 when Li was hit by a vehicle, an accident witnessed by her husband of 46 years, who suffered a fatal heart attack on the spot. Li sustained severe brain damage as a result of the accident. An obituary published in 2021 announced her death at the age of 79 in Huntsville.

Ultimately, Dr. Ning Li's story is one of loyalty and sacrifice. It was discovered that she steadfastly refused the overtures of the Chinese Communist Party, remaining dedicated to her work in America.

This dedication cost her dearly; she was even barred from returning to China for her mother's funeral. However, her loyalty to her adopted country and dedication to her mysterious research remained unbroken until the end...

11 years later and I still love hearing that intro.

It's very easy to imagine Edison having someone bumped off so he can steal a patent.

I have no doubt that Edison is guilty of all kinds of evils. Just a surface examination of his life reveals a lot.

Dr. Ning Li's warning to her son sounded rather ominous. The idea of practical antigravity is intriguing.

Mike grew up and lived in a couple towns over from me.Everyone knew how smart this dude was and believes most of his stories.

I remember reading in a Seattle newspaper around the 1970s about a local man who had invented a 100 mpg carburetor. But like so many inventors of that ilk, he vanished.

if you ever invent something that will help humanity do not patent it, release the information worldwide .

I would not be surprised to learn that the US government kept some of Tela's work.

Somehow Mike was never able to figure out camera technology and get even one picture of his "vortex" or the hundreds of objects and animals he tossed though it. Tragic really.

"The screw vanished and reappeared a few feet away"
Yes, that's what throwing actually does.

a missed Rudolph Diesel, the fellow who invented the diesel engine...boarded a ship and went POOf right out of existence. at the time that engine was groundbreaking. it gave navies a definite advantage over steam power. I have heard theories that he was supposedly offed to keep him from giving diesel technology to other nations

My great grandfather, Jasper Kelly Johnston(1871-1946) was an inventor and was 1st VP for General Electric~ lighting division. My dad past on a lot of stories im still trying to authenticate. There was a lot of friction regarding how the Hollywood film industry started versus all the inventors for making that equipment. Stealing inventors designs, ideas and equipment was all the rage, all indications were/are Edison was up to his neck in it!

She was hit by a car and her husband just happened to have a heart attack at the exact same time? How did anyone believe there was no foul play?

I know this isn’t anything wondrous or remarkable (and it probably applies to a lot of old viewers), but it’s crazy how I used to watch (and read) these videos when I was in my senior year of high school with the same delight that I have in watching (and listening to) these videos today, 3 countries, a marriage and two kids later. Thank you Dark 5.

Mad Mike was a fascinating guy. I remember his interview by Art Bell and how Mike said he jumped through his device only to wake up miles away with memory loss, and how his experimental equipment went missing. Wherever he is now???

Pretty sure Edison just had the guy bumped off since he couldn't outright steal the ideas like usual. Surprised he never had Tesla taken out.

Being different, successful, or controversial, always makes you a target. Being all three can be deadly.
