Lung sounds are crucial for EMTs to assess respiratory conditions. Rales (or crackles) are crackling or popping sounds heard during inspiration, often indicating fluid in the alveoli, commonly associated with conditions like pneumonia or congestive heart failure.

Rhonchi are low-pitched, snoring-like sounds caused by airway obstructions or secretions in the larger airways, often heard in chronic bronchitis or COPD.

Wheezing is a high-pitched whistling sound, usually heard on exhalation, indicating narrowing of the airways, typically in asthma or allergic reactions.

Stridor, an upper airway sound, is a harsh, high-pitched noise heard during inspiration, signaling partial obstruction of the upper airway, often seen in conditions like croup or foreign body aspiration. Recognizing these sounds can help determine underlying respiratory issues.
