To be clear, can you turn off the magnet? The answer is… sort of.
The mri magnet is super cooled with liquid helium. You can “quench” the magnet by venting off the helium, an expensive act. This decreases the magnetic power, but not all.

I hate It's like being buried alive!! You can't move!! Can't sit up!! It's a tiny tube!! I didn't used to be claustrophobic, now you have to drug me to put me inside!!! I have cancer, was in a killer car wreck, & broke my back, all in the past 3 years. I get an MRI every other month 😢
Suggestions:
1. Take a wet, cold wash cloth & place over your eyes. Press it down, so if you open your eyes by accident you can't see anything.
2. I found plastic earrings & backings on Amazon. You can wear these during surgery & MRI'S without a problem. I lost several new piercings because they took them out in the hospital & wouldn't let me replace them until i left.
3. Tell them you're claustrophobic up front!! Have someone drive you there & you can get drugs to help you.
4. If you know in advance, make sure to wear all cotton clothing, without buttons, zippers, etc. I have elastic waistband sweats, cotton undershirts, & cotton tops, t-shirts.
Just writing this is giving me a panic attack!!!!😢

I use to work in an office at this MRI machine. During that time people didnt know that having a metal can be a danger to the employees and at yhe same time to the patient. Wherein an ambulance came in at the MRI machine with the oxygen tank. They found out what happen next. This was one circumstances during the time MRI was still new. Another one was when a woman having a MRI Brain. She have a lot of hair clips since the hair was a wig. Too many artifacts showed at the films. Well, now MRI are very common. Its like during the time when we were only using Xray machine.
