Have you noticed it’s all around the chimneys? That’s because the chimney stack isn’t properly sealed, damp proofing won’t fix it, it’s coming down the chimney cavity

Nope you did right thing hacking off the gypsum plaster, but then you should re plaster using lime… reason being is gymsum traps moisture, whilst lime absorbs moisture and then allows it to escape…

Or fix the reason why you have damp! Often cement based products!

And no way you're getting that plastering redone for £1000, a decent skim is that nowdays.

Why not just get the gypsum rubbish off the wall, repoint using lime. Absolute rubbish this stuff. Looks like your house is built from traditional materials. Check why there is damp there and cure the problem dont patch it.

Rising damp is rare. Only if you live near a river or a swamp. On most occasions it is a condensation, broken rainwater or sewage pipe. Fix that and start heating and ventilating properly
