My Dad was a mechanic in WWII and he kept those bombers flying. I once had a chance to fly in a B17 and I told him I was going to fly in it to Oshkosh.
His reply was, " Those old war bomber planes have been so patched back together, and the airframes stressed so much from flying heavy loaded combat missions, I would ride in one just to taxing to the end of the runway in one. It's a miracle the wings havent folded up yet!
I know, I helped keep them flying. Son, stay on the ground if that's your only ride to Oshkosh!"

I wish my dad had been able to survive long enough to do some of these reunion things. There was only one person in town that he knew from the war, and he happened to be an orthopedic Doctor Who treated him. He was actually the doctor that amputated his finger during the war. He unfortunately died in 1973 at the age of 50.
