Filmmaking Wardrobe Kit Essentials

Let's go over some filmmaking wardrobe kit essentials! As a DIY filmmaker you're probably filling in for several roles and one of those roles is most likely wardrobe. So since you might not be a wardrobe designing pro, let's go over some of the essential tools you'll want to keep handy onset in your wardrobe kit.

First up, you'll want to have some sort of portable steamer. This can help you remove wrinkles from the costumes on the go. Next and along the same lines. You'll also want to have a lint roller to get rid of any pesky, lint or loose hairs that might be on your talent's costume. This is especially useful if you have a dog.

And speaking of pesky wardrobe issues, it's always super helpful to have some double-sided shirt tape to help keep costumes in place. And for those harder to pin down wardrobe malfunctions, it's always helpful to have some safety pins handy.

Next, you're going to need a place to hold all those costumes. So I recommend investing in a collapsible wardrobe rack you can take with you to filming locations. And pro-tip, I highly recommend investing in either a plastic cover for your rack or individual garment bags, to help keep your costumes nice and clean. And of course, to hang up all those beautiful costumes, you're going to need some hangers.

Next up you'll want a good pair of trusty scissors and a sewing kit, in case you have any last minute needs for costume repairs. Here's another pro tip. It's common courtesy to wash costumes before making your talent wear them, especially if those costumes came from a thrift store. But if you're in a pinch, having a bottle of Febreeze on hand can go a long way.

And here's one for all those four eyes out there. Make sure you have a microfiber cloth on hand to help remove any smudges from the talent's glasses. Or you know, your own glasses. And finally, it's great to have some latex gloves on hand, especially if you're working with costumes that might intentionally be messy, such as ones with fake blood or dirt on them.

Now these aren't all the wardrobe kit essentials you may need, as each project you work on might require more or less items, but these will at least get you started on the path to building your kit.

I was about to comment on how I would call up Natalie Lynch if I needed wardrobe and she pops up on screen. :)
