Realism and anti-realism II: Materialism and idealism

This is the second in a series of tutorials on the realism debate. Here, I discuss idealism as an anti-realist philosophy. Idealists claim that there is no mind-independent reality (or we definitely have no access to such a reality): "Ideas" is everything there is. The world is not made of "matter" as the "materialists" hold: It is "made of" ideas. Enjoy Jan Academy!

These are some really good videos. You manage to explain the matters in a clear way without oversimplifying them too much. Thanks a lot for these, they are interesting and a great help when studying. I'm looking forward to your future videos!

With our sensory experience with the table in produced by our mind, how can different people have the same sensory experience with the object in question? Are we all sharing the same mind?

How Conceptualism, like Hawking's Model Dependent Reality.
Idealism may point to some errors of simplicity materialism.

can you please explain the relationship between realism and materialism? Is one a sub topic of the other etc?

I ask because I have a text book which jumps from materialism to realism and it has confused me :-(

all the philosophical views are basically cognitive heuristics, shorthands for dealing with a range of ecological problems turned in on themselves.  each of the positions i think picks out significant things which we should acknowledge but becomes absurd when taken as a complete wordview.  idealism acknowledges that "table" qua discrete unified object which is *used* in the practices of cognizant beings, really does appear to be a "mind dependent" complex.  absent human beings even if there were spatiotemporal processes 'arranged table wise' there would be no 'tabling' per se.  tabling brings forth tables in practices that establish the signification of slices of space time processes for the purposes of discursive creatures.

I want to recommend you to take a course on drawing on a white board like that - (I am not kidding, there is courses for business and organization employees doing presentations for example).

Before you even start the video, the title itself just conflates idealism with anti-realism, which is a mistake that analytic philosophers have been making for too long.

Wouldn't it make Kant a realist, if he implies that there is a shared reality resulting from universal epistemological prerequisites?

When a human eats food (material) is that human eating an idea of food or food as material? If a human does not eat food (material) then that human dies. Conclusion an organism cannot live an idea of food alone. The mind can think food is just an idea but experience of not eating food (material) proves otherwise. At least for practical purposes material exists to exist.
