Her sister Carolyn Franklin wrote this. Carolyn was a lesbian, and this is a song about a woman trying to convince a woman to come out and be herself, so that they could be together. It's been reclaimed as a lesbian anthem. Carolyn, very sadly, died young of breast cancer at age 44.

This song by Aretha Franklin is the best song she recorded. It's from her heart, from her soul way down deep inside. All the pain, the heartache and the love for a man, will take you there. I LOVE THIS SONG because itn was her shining moment where everything was revealed. Your heart can only take so much, especially, when your heart is in pain. She was a voice of all women who are in love, so distinctively, you could feel everything. She had the ability to sing something so personal, that it aroused every thing inside of you that you kept a secret for years. She let us know, we were never left alone, even though, we never knew it. That song she sang let us know how much we love and never be ashamed of it.
