In this video Heimler takes you through Unit 5 Topic 3 of the AP U.S. History curriculum which is set in period 5 (1844-1877).

It's time for the Mexican American War. This war was directly caused by the annexation of Texas which had gained its independence from Mexico in 1836. Additionally, with the election of James K. Polk and his platform infused with Manifest Destiny land acquisition, the conditions were ripe for war with Mexico.

The United States won the war handily, and with it came the Mexican Cession which included the new territories of California and New Mexico. Along with the Gadsden Purchase, Mexico handed more than 50% of its territory in the Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo.

The big question that loomed was this: would slavery be permitted in the new territories. During the war, David Wilmot proposed the Wilmot Proviso which said no. But it was struck down in the Senate. However, that little amendment was a sign of the growing fight to come over the slavery question.

If you have any questions, leave them below and Heimler shall answer forthwithly.

This video is aligned with the AP U.S. History Curriculum and Exam Description for Unit 5 Topic 3, and all the key concepts thereunto appertaining.

my notes:
What were the causes and effects of the Mexican-American War?
- Texas no longer wanted to be independent, it wanted to be part of the US
- James K Polk was elected and promised to annex Texas
- Predecessor John Tyler pushed through the annexation of Texas before he left presidency
- Sent diplomat John Slidell to
○ Ask government to sell more land
○ Settle location of southern border of Texas
- Mexico did not budge on either issue
- Polk sent General Zachary Taylor to disputed territory and 12 Americans were killed
- Congress granted Polk war
- Small amount of military gained New Mexico Territory and California
- General Winfield Scott occupied Mexico City
○ Forced Mexican government to negotiate
§ Established Rio Grande as border for Texas
§ Gave California and New Mexico to US for 15 million
- Wilmot Proviso
○ Proposed that new territory gained from war would not allow slavery
○ This was turned down but brought up the debate of slave states
- Treaty of peace gave Mexicans in new territory would be granted US citizenship, but the Indians living there would not have citizenship

why would Abolitionist want to turn down the wilmot proviso?

If the Wilmot Proviso was to ensure there was no slavery on the land gained from Mexico, and the politicians that voted it down wanted free soil, then why wouldn't the politicians vote for it b/c it would allow the area to be free?

I wish he was my history teacher, I am a couple weeks into the 2nd 9 weeks and he STILL has yet to teach us anything. He claims to love history yet he seems to love himself wayyyy more, he spends the 50 minutes of classtime talking about himself, going off topic, going off topic, going off topic, but NO TEACHING. We have a huge exam in the middle and end of the year and I an not gonna be ready because I have truly learned nothing

3:55 you mentioned the Gadsden Purchase, but to put a pin in this for later discussion isn't necessary to mention the reasons why? Ap Us does not identify specifically mentions the main reason for this purchase (it is vague as to the standard) but the reason for the purchase was to connect a southern railroad from San Antonio, to El Paso to San Diego. It was the only real flat land available from southern east to west and what will precipitate the south secession motives for civil war. The key reason being that southern parts of New Mexico, and Arizona were pro confederate and stood much to gain from the purchase.

didn't Tyler want annexation because he thought Texas would ally with Britain if they didn't annex it??
