Scientists grow synthetic human embryo without eggs, sperm, or womb

Scientists in Israel have created a model of a human embryo from stem cells in the lab, without using sperm, eggs or a womb, offering a unique glimpse into the early stages of embryonic development.

The model resembles an embryo at day 14, when it acquires internal structures but before it lays down the foundations for body organs, according to the team at Israel's Weizmann Institute of Science.

The Israeli team emphasized that they were a long way from being able to create an embryo from scratch, however, the work could open the door to new ways to test the effect of drugs on pregnancies, better understand miscarriages and genetic diseases, and perhaps even to grow transplant tissues and organs.

The ethics concerns are minor as far as I can see. If this technology helps us cure diseases or recover diseased or damaged organs in humans, I don't see a downside. It's not as though they are going to grow viable humans from this tech. People who are too scared of this technology don't know enough about science and medicine. Far more invasive and unethical things have been done to humans and animals in the past to help cure disease. This is medical science at its best.
