Good to know even hurricanes have a DMZ separating north and south.

Not possible for any cyclone to ever cross the equator. First, cyclones have seasons. Usually hot summer months. It is winter in the southern hemisphere when the northern hemisphere experiences summer so the climate would not support it. Second, the wind flows in the opposite direction (clockwise in the north and counter clockwise in the south) so if one tries to, the oncoming opposing force will calm it down even before it crosses. It is not at all possible for a cyclone to cross the equator.

There have been several close calls, the one you highlighted was cyclone Agni in 2004.

I have a hunch that hurricanes do not happen here in South America, because we have that massive chain of mountains called Los Andes, that goes in the axis N-S.

The track next to South America was just one storm.

The one that hit the UK would be the Great Storm of '87. Fun time that was.

I'm very glad Indonesia is not in the hurricane zone. We already have massive volcanoes, active plate tectonics and crappy politicians

That one that got really close actually went to 0.5 degrees South while the system was organizing, which would thus make it the only hurricane to reach into both hemispheres.

Only once in recorded history there was a hurricane in the South Atlantic and I happened to be there. Hurricane Catarina in 2004.

I'm kicking back on a beach in western Indonesia watching the hurricanes blow by either side of me.

Two or three major hurricane have hit Baja California including hurricane Oliva in 1967 and hurricane Kiko in 1989. With global warming it's just a matter of time before southern California is hit.

Don't hurricanes/ cyclones spin in the opposite direction in the northern and southern hemispheres? 🤔 .... So if one _did, _ somehow, manage to cross the equator, wouldn't it immediately unravel and fall apart?

They are typhoons in East Asia, cyclones in the South Pacific and cyclones everywhere else

Well what about the 'Hawker Hurricane'?
I'm pretty sure that can...
With enough fuel that is 🤣

If a hurricane would cross the equator it would star spinning in the opposite way.

There was once a typhoon that was Very close to the equator once back in 2001

Science fact: due to the Coriolis effect, the effect that makes cyclones spin in the first place, causes them to go up in the northern hem, and south in the southern hem. HOWEVER, there are near-equatorial cyclones that do exist.

I had no idea that hurricanes never cross the equator, why is that? Does it have something to do with ocean currents or the temperature of the water?

Strange fact but the UK recieves the most hurricanes (intense winds) per capita in the world
