Bangladesh student protests: Curfew imposed in Dhaka amid deadly demonstrations over job quotas
Показать описание
In response to violent student-led protests, Bangladeshi soldiers enforced a curfew in the capital city of Dhaka. At least 105 people have died in the demonstrations against government job quotas. Internet and text message services have been suspended since Thursday, isolating Bangladesh from the rest of the world.
Tapan Chandra, an Indian citizen returning from Bangladesh, described the situation as horrific, and said, "Jails, factories and vehicles have been put on fire. Prisoners were burned to death. Roads were also destroyed. Buses, many other vehicles, and houses have also been destroyed and torched by the protests. There is nothing left."
Over the past five days, clashes between protesters and security personnel have escalated, with police firing tear gas and hurling sound grenades to disperse demonstrators, who have responded by throwing bricks and setting vehicles on fire.
