The future of the Orion constellation

This video reveals how our view of the Orion constellation will evolve over the next 450 000 years.

Amid a myriad of drifting stars, the shape of Orion as defined by its brightest stars is slowly rearranged into a new pattern as time goes by.

The portion of the sky depicted in the video measures 40 x 20º – as a comparison, the diameter of the full Moon in the sky is about half a degree.

The video is based on data from ESA's Gaia and Hipparcos satellites, as well as additional information from ground-based observations.

Its the most easily distinguishable and beautiful constellation in the sky. I first observed it when I was 16. It's the closest to my heart.

Betelgeuse didn't explode because this animation only considers the movement of the stars, not any sort of evolution or luminosity change. Interesting how the main stars of the constellation barely move, showing how far and therefore intrinsically bright they are. Betelgeuse did move a lot because it is a runaway star caused by a supernova explosion.

Awesome simulation. I wrote a star cluster program in the 90's but this is just awesome. Interesting to see how stars change their trajectory as they pass large objects. Fascinating. Make a 30 minute version of this. I could watch it for hours.

why the video doesn't have any timescale?? and why Betelgeuse didn't explode?

I thought all the stars orbit around the center of the galaxy so star movement as seen from the sun, which is moving too, should be like roughly in the same direction, some opposite direction. But here you see some of them move all directions. Hard to picture what their actual orbit look like around the galaxy.

it feels dumb to ask this question and all but i dont understand why most of the lights were moving? at 0:43 if you look to the right there are a group of stars moving upwards? which force is making them do that and the rest too? thanks in advance! :D
