I sang in a church choir in the US for several years. Once, an elderly alto turned to me during choir practice and said, "You have a nice bass sound. It sounds Russian to me." I had never received such a compliment. Later, we had an 80-yr-old, blind guest maestro for a big number he had written. After practice, I introduced myself and thanked him for helping us with his hymn. He said to me, "You should stay here. They really need your voice." I was flabbergasted.
