Been awhile since I watched a BGB. Lots of quality increases in old favorites and some really good new (to me) segments. The Dwarf Token girl was great and I also enjoyed Solomode and the "What Should I Get" sections. Thanks for opening up to such a great community Dice Tower!

Shuffling: table shuffle, 4-5 piles depending in the deck size. Say 4 for example, then take pile 4 and 2, a few quick overhands and few mashes (sleeved cards), take pile 1 and 3 a few quick over hands and mashes. Combine the two piles, a few quick overhands quick mash. Job done.

I enjoyed Suzanne's segment today! So many cute animals. But also, several of the segments were great, including What Should I Get, Boardgame Makeover, Colleagues, and Dan hitting Cora with the purple spongehand, and Cora taking the high road by snatching it back from him and smiling.

The Thrift Store segment is fantastic. I'm super excited to see the Justin Bieber games still on their shelf.

Enjoying Gary Pope's segment each week.

If the cards are sleeved I'll mash shuffle, else I'll riffle shuffle.

Was surprised that Boardgame makeover didn't want to make a Simpsons version of Cthulhu wars.

@chaz I went back to riffle shuffling after I saw all of the damage the edges of my cards get from overhand shuffling.I'd rather have bent cards than ones where the edges are all dinged up.

I worked as a Casino Card Games Dealer for a long time and the most effective (in terms of randomization/effort/time) way to shuffle in my experience is a "House" shuffle: This is 3 standard Riffle shuffles followed by a "Strip Riffle", then Riffle, and finally a "Cut" from another player. The randomization from this method is close to the point of 10 standard Riffle shuffles with half the amount of actual maneuvers.

To the point about card wear: Most people have learned how to do a Riffle by bending the cards between thumb and forefingers but if you use a "Table Riffle" you will bend the cards SIGNIFICANTLY less and be able to shuffle much more efficiently. :D

A word of warning: Once you learn how to shuffle well, anyone who knows will ALWAYS give you the cards to be shuffled prior to a game. THIS IS MY CURSE. D:

Re: Applied Mechanics Annette says "the main mechanism is sound". Good pun Annette!
Re: Tom thinks. Premium components are great, but personally I prefer more content instead of premium components. I think for me variety is going to keep the game on the table more than awesome components. Two great examples are Gloomhaven and Dawn of the Zeds. I think the designers made great choices in providing lots of polished content while keeping costs in line by (mostly) not using miniatures. I also own, appreciate and enjoy Scythe, which is amazingly produced. But Gloomhaven is almost in a class of its own in terms of value, and part of that value comes from judicious component choices (IMHO).

sleeved cards = smoosh shuffle which is sort of like riffle but you don't bend the cards, you just slide them between each other due to the space that sleeve thickness create between cards. Pile shuffling also works at different numbers of piles and semi-random dealing of 5+ piles depending on how thick the deck is.

Dwarf Token got the repeat from last week's episode.

I've gotta HAND it to you. That's a super subtle haunted shed reference during the news. ;)

@chaz I don't usually like to riffle shuffle my cards for the wear on the deck. Instead I grab the deck and distribute the cards in 10 piles that I randomly put back together afterwards with a few overhand shuffles

Hey Chris, making your own character is actually the most fun.

Ahh! I loved that "There she is" animated video when I was growing up. <3 :D

When I am with my kids (and their hands are clean) I have them do the "wash" method of shuffling as their hands aren't developed enough to riffle and they don't overhand well

there are only two viable shuffling methods: either 1) riffle shuffle, or 2) sleeve and side shuffle.

If someone doesn't want to sleeve their game but also doesn't want to riffle the cards, then I simply won't play with them. You can't sufficiently randomize any other way, and insufficient randomization is a huge deal breaker for me.

A Faro shuffle accomplishes the same thing as a riffle shuffle without the wear and tear on the cards. It does take a bit of skill however. I've been a magician for many years so I'm already comfortable with it. When gaming with my group, I usually use a Faro. Personally, I have no problem riffle shuffling my cards as the wear is negligible IMO but as a courtesy I don't do it with others people's cards.
