Autobiography can sometimes invite self-aggrandizement, especially for entertainers, but Born Standing Up is a tender, even understated book. Crafted, like his comedy.

For all the 'wackiness' of his stand-up, Martin's ranging mind shows, too. I had the feeling that had he sought another path to channel that energy and aptitude, he would have eventually contributed to that field, as he has comedy and film.

A man, unlike the often chaotic lives of his contemporaries, of character.
