I love the friendly format! Great review!

I think what a lot of (basically all) reviews ive seen do miss is the fact that the middle+neck setting was an accident that Johnson faced when tweaking. The original Virginia had a later 50s neck pickup and another 60s or earlier 50s. Original fender pickups from the pre CBS-era never had the reverse would reverse polarity on the middle. Then he also replaced the original 54 bridge with something that would have greater output but yet retain a vintage single coil sound when played clean. The HS pickups have two stacked coils that in humbucking mode cancel the hum by facing the polarity against each other. When connected in humbucking the output is less than what it is in single coil, as the dc resistance is higher when the bottom coil is disconnected. Essentially each coil is overwound and together the DC drops. This is what eric wanted = the dc to be higher than a regular stock fender. I believe a standard 54 pickup would be around 5-6 K but the HS2 in single mode is around 12-13k. However when played single coil the polarity of the bridge + middle would be humcancelling due to the nature of the middle pickup, but the neck did not match the polarity of the middle one. Essentially he could not achieve a normal sound on bridge+mid and mid+neck. He would prefer playing on the bridge + middle for clean and compromise as he loved the sound on the neck alone. Hence he developed the koto technique after that by accident. He only uses the koto setting clean.

Cheers! 😊

She's adorable! Oh, good review too... :-) And, you play very well. Since, no one plays like Johnson, who wants to hear a review with him playing anyway?

The only thing I'd change about this guitar is I'd replace the bottom tone knob with a switch for doing from humbucking to true single coil and I'd replace the middle and neck with HS-2s as well. I've been a fan of the HS-2 for a long time. Better pickup than the HS-3 used by Yngwie for decades before his move to Duncan. I like how it sounds in the bridge in full humbucking mode, but also love the true single coil mode as well which is fantastic and low noise as well. Cool guitar, great demo, great playing.

Excellent review, great playing. Thanks for the video.
I own a Virginia Strat too. A few questions...1. Did you find the as-received guitar more difficult for string bends than one of your other Strats. I did and it makes no sense but it fatigues me. 2. Did you think the bridge pickup was more powerful than a regular Strat? I played two of these guitars and felt the rear pickup was weak and lacked character. 3. Did you leave the springs as received or have you tried loosening up the bridge?

Nice review. So is the whammy bar on this Strat useable with 4 trem springs? Cheers.

Ordered this guitar at beginning of this year. Looks like it was out of stock and they had to build me one haha. Supposed to come in august, and I've been watching reviews of it in anticipation. Nice video, and great review! Keep it up!

Thanks for the review, is it possible you could check under the input jack where the second ground is? curious if its a mistake or something unique to Erics Virginia. Cheers

So does the Virginia have any hum in 1, 3 and 5 positions?

Where is this guitar made? Based on the price I assume USA.

So what exactly is the difference between this version and the Fender Masterbuilt custom shop version? In other words what does one get for $20k+ as opposed to $2.7k?

Also, great review. Thorough and detailed!
