The mystery of the Roanoke Colony, often called the "Lost Colony," centers on the disappearance of 115 English settlers from Roanoke Island, present-day North Carolina, around 1587. Led by John White, the settlers vanished while White was delayed in England due to the Anglo-Spanish War. When he returned in 1590, he found the settlement abandoned, with only the word "CROATOAN" carved into a wooden post, suggesting a possible relocation to Croatoan Island (now Hatteras Island).
Theories about the colony's fate range from integration with local Native American tribes to being victims of conflicts or starvation. There are suggestions that the settlers moved inland or perished due to environmental challenges, but no conclusive evidence has ever surfaced.
