How Koi Fish Ended Up In Street Gutters In Japan?

Why does Japan have koi fish living in street gutters—and how do they survive? You might’ve seen videos of these colorful fish in what look like street gutters, making people think Japan’s water is that clean. But there's more to the story. This unique scene is actually found in the city of Shimabara, where a massive earthquake and landslide in 1792 triggered hundreds of natural freshwater springs across the area. Then, in 1978, the city released koi into specially maintained sections of these canals, entirely separate from wastewater, to beautify public spaces.

When goldfish gets into canals, they turn into koi. What an extreme transformation!

I love how the fish casually staring at the camera like its just another day of humans taking a pic of them

So they have two different types of canals 1 for beautification and different canal for waste water, that's totally misleading

No one here knows about koi it seems. They are very highly regarded by the Japanese people. That love has spread to Hawaii where thousands live and many have fish ponds. Every year there is a contest to judge the most beautiful koi. They sell for lots of money.
