This is seriously the weirdest machine I've ever come across. It is a total design fuck-up.
- It is very well built. The keys feel nice, very heavy, not UV sensitive any more. "Wow" you think until you turn it on.
- It has a disastrous video out circuit. You can basically ONLY use this with a 1084 monitor, and even then both 40 character modes deliver shit quality video. The RGB out is fine, but it is TTL, so only working on a 1084 or compatible CGA monitor. There are SCART adapters, but they alter the colour (that is prettier, but not as intended). If you have a 1084 with working unbroken door, be prepared to kill it with your 128 by endlesly opening it to hit the RGB/CL switch.
- The default BASIC screen is even uglier than C64, black on green is a big eye sore. Who came up with this junk?
- The 3 flavours of BASIC combined make use a headache. What works in which state? And with C64 mode, your "faster" 1570 drive becomes a slow 1541 as well. Who came up with that? And the "pro" version 7 BASIC of the 80 character mode still hasn't ironed out the big flaws of C64 BASIC. 3 years later and still crappy BASIC.
- The original power brick (you have a compact aftermarket one) is humoungous. Doorstopper? Burglarkiller? And then thinking a 5V 3A USB charger could run this machine as well.
- Sound output is terrible, huge amount of noise. Step back from the C64.
- VIC chip Chroma/Luma output is still a mess. For such a well crafted machine, you get below dead-flesh-keys Speccy-1 quality video output. There is still colour bleed, and there are still jailbars. Unacceptable! RGB is the only mode that delivers crisp output, but still with the horrible C64 colour palette, and hardly any software for it. You can't play C64 games in RGB mode.

I’m just going to experience the Commodore 64 via the C64 mini. $40 for a nice joystick, tons of games and a quick way to get tons of Roms

I tried getting a C64 emulator and I’m definitely not experienced with early computers. It was a nightmare getting it to run and when it did it was too fast and had no music
