What Does 808 Mean in Music?

808 is arguably the most popular number in both music and production. Phrases referring to the 808 Kick, 808 Snare, 808 Bass, 808 Sound, and more are commonly said, and a big question I've received is: What does 808 Mean in Music? What does that number refer to? In the Kanye West Interview, what did he mean exactly when it comes to the Kanye West 808 Album?

In this video I talk about the history of the 808, where it evolved from, and how it revolutionized music forever

One of my favourite Kendrick Lamar lyrics:

My generation sippin' cough syrup like its water
Never no pancakes in the kitchen
Man, no wonder our lives is caught up in the daily superstition
That the world is 'bout to end who gives a fuck? We never do listen
Unless it comes with an 808, a melody and some hoes
Playstation and some drank, technology bumping soul.

Basically it is named after ''Aido Aid'', who was a sound engineer in 1986, that developed a certain sound that brings peace to the world and actually I am kidding

I just watched this video because I wanted to know how you pronounce "808" because it is in the song "Can't hold us" and I'm trying to learn it which is kinda difficult because I just learn English in school 😂

My question is why do all new songs follow the same pattern. Drums, base line, 808s, same chords etc etc. Better question is why do songs sound the same. When someone learns to make music, is it about following a pattern to make sure it sounds like 100 other songs? I remember a time when songs came out and were hits that sounded different, new and different and exciting. We have become sheep following the leader and afraid to go our own way. Even singers copy other singers in the way they pronounce words etc. If a new singer is successful, suddenly there are hundreds of new ones that sound exactly the same. It's not being creative, it's being good at copying.

"TECHMASTER PEB - BASS COMPUTER" *Patric E Baker
We had so many 'Bass Heads' in school in the late 80's and early 90's with huge stereos. '66 Bug 6 12s, Ranger 8 12s, a '62 Bug two 10s, two 12s, two 15s (odd setup) another Bug 4 18s plus the early Honda Accord that made the cover of Car Audio Mag, he went to school with us as well. Seems like nothing like today but sht like that back then was stupid expensive.
**Williston Audio Labs knows all about this, we're about the same age.
