To quote the great Chinua Achebe,

"The white man is very clever. He came quietly and peaceably with his religion. We were amused at his foolishness and allowed him to stay. Now he has won our brothers, and our clan can no longer act like one. He has put a knife on the things that held us together and we have fallen apart."

The common misconception is that our Ancestors submitted to the power of the gun but they actually fought long and hard with intelligence and wit. Basically Europe took control of this continent by turning tribes against each other.

The Romans did the same thing when they invaded what is now England and Welsh. They took advantage of the many divisions among the Celtic tribes. As one Roman general put it they resisted individually but they were universally conquered.

Divide and rule is as old as mankind. We Africans should be wise to it by now.

This video outlines a good number of factors in the conquest of Africa. The divisions between warring kingdoms in the continent led to some of them becoming allied to Europeans to help them to defeat their local rivals. Early on, part of these alliances actually led to kingdoms helping the Europeans raid other nations for slaves in order to weaken them. Over time, the Europeans slowly gained control of large swathes, and these allied kingdoms would soon come to see the motives of these foreigners when it was too late.
Another thing is, in every African nation, you will find tens, and in places like DRC, Nigeria and Tanzania, hundreds of ethnic 'tribes' that existed as separate nations before colonialism. The unification of these tribes into countries has resulted in the tribal divisions that are so common in many African nations. This is as opposed to European nations that are largely homonegous, with a single tribe e.g. the French, or the Hungarians, forming one nation. The tribal wars and conflicts in Europe that happened many years ago and led to the extermination of tribes like the heruli and ostrogoths, and the division of empires like the Austro-Hungarian empire and Yugoslavia into tribal-based states are a case in point of these tribal wars. So these ethnic divisions are present all over the world. Even Malaysia and Singapore were divided because of their ethnic composition (Malays and Chinese).
Hope this explains a lot....

As soon as I saw the quote by John Thornton (one of my favourite historians of Africa...his work on Nzinga is really good) I thought "Wow....this guy's serious."

Brilliant channel. Well done.

I read in one of my history books, that in the time that it took to reload a musket an archor could let off nine arrows. James Smalls tell us that it wasn't until the invention of the Gattling Gun that changed the landscape of war in Africa.

5:04 so could be a bit like the Phalanx vs maniple but on a much smaller unit scale. basically the romans used the Phalanx until they encountered the hill people and since the Phalanx requires flat terrain the weakness were open and they were defeated. the roman invented the maniple system to adapt still closed formation but less rigid and way more flexible. so the central african style from what i understand is a constant war of movement

Simply put, @ 7:22 - we are our own worst enemy. The same tactics was deployed for neocolonialism and in creating resources colonies (countries) in Africa at the 1884–1885 Berlin Conference with the exception of Ethiopia that didn’t fall for divide and conquer tactics. Thank you, HomeTeam History, for another great historical educational video.
