So to provide more context, no, it is not dangerous to yourself to pick up a sand dollar. After picking up a few, you may notice your hands are stained yellow. This is just their defense mechanism, and won’t harm you. Secondly, like most other sea creatures, they can’t breathe out of water. So if you pick one up, just take a few seconds to admire it, and then gently lower it back to the area you found it
