There is a woman who once told her friend “don’t let your hurt childhood self make your grown up decisions”. And those are words to live by

“Just ignore it” makes my blood boil.
I’ve been told that so many times, even with physical bullying.

Especially when it comes to teachers, "Just ignore it" actually means, "we don't want to be bothered with your problems."

“Just ignore it” makes the bullies try harder, because “if you want to achieve something, you won’t give up first try.”

I can relate to this. I honestly think that telling a kid to “just ignore it” when it comes to bullying is not just bad advice, it’s PSYCHOLOGICALLY DAMAGING advice. I got told for 3 years straight through primary (I’m British) school to “just ignore it” and thanks to the teachers’ incompetence, I stopped going to adults for help and I still struggle to ask for help even as a young adult for things that aren’t related to bullying.
Edit: I also suffer with severe social anxiety and can’t walk in a room full of people without thinking I’m going to get mentally hurt.

I think in middle school especially the staff just have the mindset that "they're kids, they'll get over it" and "it's not that bad, they'll live", so they don't feel like they have to actually handle the situation until someone's parents show up and demand they adress it.
Then they're saying they've been doing their best and the bullies are suddenly suspended.
(This is what I've heard from so many people about middle school and even went through this myself... it's sad that this is so common.)

"Just ignore it" was the worst advice I got as a kid. That didn't result into the bullies getting bored, like the adults claimed, but the bullies getting more creative and also more aggressive. The attacks got worse because when "you don't achieve something in the first try, you try something else", right?
To this day I don't know what I would say to my younger self. I have no advice because I still have no clue what would have stopped this nightmare. But what I learned is: "don't believe them. YOU are NOT the problem. And even when it doesn't feel like it now, but things will change. Keep your kindness, because some day there will be people who appreciate you for this " and at least for me, when school was over, this nightmare was over too.

“Stop bullying your friends and apologise.”

*And that was when she yoinked the final straw.*

This is something everyone needs to learn, especially adults: ignoring doesn’t do shit. It makes it worse because it gives the false impression that bullying is okay, because no one does anything about it. I was bullied my entire life in public school, not an exaggeration, and it only stopped when I stood up for myself and told them to stop, and when I gained confidence out of spite. Then when I graduated high school I was free. I just wish I had the strength to do it sooner than the very end of school.

This “just ignore it” stuff also primes little girls for assault. It’s literally the same arguments. Got assaulted? What were you wearing? Getting bullied? What are you wearing? “Just tell them no!” Same thing there. Surely it’s something YOU’RE doing.

I’m telling ya, we get girls convinced their suffering is their fault REAL early.

Bullies: *Exist*
Teacher: *I’m a pretend I didn’t see that*
Victim: *Rightfully defends self*
Teacher: *Now you have officially carried it too far buddy*

"Just ignore it." That is actually the dumbest thing a teacher could say to a student, ESPECIALLY regarding the circumstances mentioned in this video

“Just ignoring it” just lets the bullies get away with it. Thank you for this video. Makes me hope that anyone currently facing bullies learns that you have to be confrontational, even if it’s scary.

my sister was being bullied on kindergarten and my dad went to the teacher personally to complain about this and the teacher just shrugged it off saying thing like “oh, this kind of things happens in life, she has to learn how to deal with it”. So my dad taught my sister how to punch, and the next day she nocked out the bully with a punch. And ppl still says violence isn’t the answer

As a teaching assistant, I’d never tell a kid “just ignore it”. I always tell bullies to stop what they’re doing and if they chose not to stop, I’d send them to the office.

The adults who say “just ignore it” are really saying “I don’t care, I can’t be bothered to deal with it.” And leave a poor child wondering why they’re being targeted. I was never bullied, but my old friend was, and he was the kindest person you could ever know. Luckily, he still embraces himself to this day, and I know not every bullied kid can be like that. My mom always taught me to fight fire with fire, stand up for yourself. And I have to say, I agree. Never let anybody hurt you for absolutely no reason. Let them know that they can’t bother you.

I’m sorry so many educators and and “professionals” failed you. One of the things I love about being an educator is being able to help children the way I wanted to but wasn’t. Thank you for sharing your experience.

I got second hand rage just from watching this video, especially after the “just forget it”.
Also, friggin councillor deserves to be ✨fired✨ because I’m pretty sure they just hired a kindergarten teacher for the job.
