Ano Syros Syros Greece
Ano Syros, or the Upper Town, as the locals call it, is the only area of Syros which maintains its medieval appearance. The old and traditional color of the settlement is evident in every alley, in every image the visitor beholds. Labyrinthine alleyways, traditional whitewashed houses, arches over the road and the narrow streets with stairs leading to small neighborhoods are characteristic of the area. Ano Syros is built on two hills and overlooks Ermoupoli to its left. It was built in the 13th century by the Venetians. In the same location there was a settlement dating back to the 8th century. Climbing the thousand stairs to the top of the Hill affords you a spectacular view of the village and the Church of Saint George.
